Morocco VS Portugal: Into The Unkown

On December 10, 2022, Morocco pulled off a stunning upset against Portugal in the quarterfinals of the Qatar World Cup, winning the match 2-1.

The Moroccan team, led by star forward Khalid Boutaib, dominated the game from the start, controlling possession and creating numerous scoring opportunities. In the 37th minute, Boutaib scored the first goal of the match, latching onto a pass from midfielder Hakim Ziyech and finishing with a powerful shot past the Portuguese goalkeeper.

Portugal, the reigning European champions, tried to fight back in the second half, but the Moroccan defense held firm. In the 71st minute, Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo, widely considered one of the greatest players of all time, had a chance to equalize with a penalty kick, but his shot was saved by Moroccan goalkeeper Munir Mohamedi.

The Moroccans sealed the victory in the 85th minute, when Ziyech scored a brilliant goal from outside the box, curling a shot into the top corner of the net. The Portuguese players were unable to mount a comeback in the remaining minutes of the match, and the final whistle blew with Morocco celebrating a historic victory.

With this win, Morocco has advanced to the semifinals of the World Cup for the first time in the country’s history. They will face the winner of the quarterfinal match between Argentina and Croatia, which will be played on Tuesday, December 13th.

The Moroccan team has been a surprise of this World Cup, having been considered a long shot to even make it out of the group stage. However, they have exceeded expectations with their strong defense and dynamic attack. If they can continue their strong form in the semifinals, they could potentially become the first African team to reach the World Cup final.

Regardless of the result in the semifinals, Morocco’s performance in this tournament has been a huge success, and their win against Portugal will be remembered for years to come as one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history.
