Jordanian Army Shoots Down Drone from Syria Carrying Meth

In a region ravaged by conflict and violence, the effects of war are deeply felt. According to Western anti-narcotics officials and Washington, Syria has emerged as a significant center for a lucrative drug trade worth billions of dollars. The country serves as a crucial transit route, with Jordan playing a key role in facilitating the transportation of a Syrian-produced amphetamine called captagon to the oil-rich Gulf states. However, it is worth noting that the discovery of crystal methamphetamine among the seized drugs is a relatively infrequent occurrence.

In a significant development, military and security officials hailing from Jordan and Syria convened to address the pressing issue of escalating smuggling activities. The meeting aimed to explore potential strategies and measures to effectively combat this burgeoning challenge. Damascus’ promises to crack down on the illicit trade have failed to materialize, according to Jordan.

Syrian authorities have not provided an immediate comment on the matter. During a recent interview, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad refuted any allegations suggesting Syria’s involvement in the drug trade. Emphasizing a shared interest with Arab nations, President al-Assad expressed a commitment to combating narcotics smuggling.
